Address of Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov on the 73rd anniversary of Victory in Great Patriotic War

9 May 2018, Wednesday

“Dear citizens of Tatarstan!

Dear war veterans and homefront workers!

On behalf of the State Council of the republic, the Government of Tatarstan and on my own behalf, I congratulate you on the 73rd anniversary of Victory in Great Patriotic War!

Victory Day – the 9th of May has long been not only a national holiday marking the end of the most terrible and bloody war in human history, it is an integral part of our civic identity, a vivid symbol of resilience, courage and greatness of spirit of the multinational people of a great country.

The Victory Banner planted by the Soviet soldier-liberator on the defeated Reichstag, today encourages us to military and labor feats. “And turned its benefits honor to our soldiers. So many victories ahead of it! Only the first victory in 1945!” the poet Feliks Chuev exactly noted.

The Great Victory was achieved through irreparable losses: tens of millions of dead, thousands of cities and villages burned, destroyed factories, plants and cultural monuments. Over 700,000 people went to war only from one Tatarstan and almost half of them did not come back to their homes. We will never forget and will not forgive the Nazis and their ideological heirs numerous crimes, the horrors of genocide, occupation, hunger and the blockade.

To date, when the planet is again under threat of a global conflict, our glorious Armed Forces - successors of the Great Victory - effectively confront fatuous aggressive designs and international terrorism on the near and far borders of the Motherland. Our peaceful work, happy future of our children are in need of reliable protection!

Today, we honor the representatives of the heroic military generation - front-line soldiers and homefront workers with special respect and filial gratitude, who selflessly fought for the freedom of the Motherland and approached the cherished Victory Day closer in the factory workshops, collective farm fields and design-engineering departments. Unfortunately, time is passing, and there are very few direct participants of those historical events among us. I sincerely wish you, dear veterans, long years of life, happiness and well-being!

Eternal memory to the fallen heroes! Glory to the victorious people!

Dear citizens of Tatarstan, clear sky overhead and joy of constructive work! Happy holiday! Happy Victory Day!

Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov.”
